A Fixed Point: Photographing One Field for a Year
A fixed camera position and a fixed hour turn a year of frames into a record of slow change in a field, from soil colour to crop cover.

The short answer
A camera becomes a measuring instrument when it is bolted to one spot and fired at one hour. The point must be fixed, the hour must be fixed, and the frames must be labelled before they are filed. Change the position or the clock and the record measures the photographer, not the field. A photographic record of a French terroir, kept in the same way, does the same work for a vineyard or a bocage: it shows the ground changing under a fixed gaze, which is how landscape photography of French regions is often built.
Where should the camera stand?
Stand where the field shows its depth. A position slightly above the crop line, on a bank, a gate post or a low tripod, gives a view across the ground rather than down onto it. The frame should hold one permanent anchor: a fence post, a stone, a lone tree, a corner of a hedge. That anchor lets a reader compare two frames taken months apart without measuring anything.
Avoid the temptation to move closer for detail. A second fixed point can be added later, but each point needs its own full year before the two are compared. A single point, held for twelve months, is worth more than six points held for two months each.
Orientation matters as much as position. A north-facing view keeps the sun behind the camera for most of the day in the northern hemisphere, which flattens the light and hides the texture of the soil. A view that crosses the sun, roughly east or west, gives long shadows in the morning or the evening and shows the surface of the ground. The choice is made once, at the start, and then left alone.
What time of day should be used?
One hour, chosen for the light and then never changed. Early morning and late afternoon give the lowest sun and the longest shadows, which reveal ridges, furrows, stones and the height of a crop. Midday gives flat, even light, useful for colour comparison but poor for form.
The hour should be a clock hour, not a light hour. Photographing at "golden hour" sounds precise but moves through the year by more than two hours between midwinter and midsummer. A fixed clock time, say 08:00 or 17:00, keeps the sun angle changing through the seasons, and that change is part of what the record shows.
Weather is not a reason to skip a frame. An overcast day, a wet day, a day with snow on the ground: each is a reading. A gap in the sequence is a gap in the data, and a reader will notice it. If the schedule is weekly, keep it weekly. If it is monthly, keep it monthly.
What does a year of frames show that a single visit cannot?
A single visit shows a state. A year of frames shows a rate. The difference is the whole point of the exercise.
Slow changes are invisible in one frame because there is nothing to compare them against. Soil colour darkens or pales over weeks. A cover crop emerges, thickens, is grazed or ploughed in. Water sits in one corner after rain and drains at a speed that depends on compaction. A hedge leafs out, flowers, sets fruit and drops. None of these are events. They are processes, and a process needs at least two points in time to be seen at all.
A year also exposes what a single visit hides: the parts of the field that behave differently from the rest. The wet corner, the shaded strip along the hedge, the patch where the crop comes up late. These are the places where a soil assessment will later be worth doing, and the frames show where to look.
How should the frames be stored and labelled?
Label at the moment of capture, not afterwards. The label needs four things: the point name, the date, the clock time and the direction of view. A file name such as point-a_2026-03-14_0800_north.jpg carries all four and survives a move between computers, a change of software and a decade of storage.
Store the frames in one folder per point, with subfolders by year. Keep the original files untouched and work from copies. A contact sheet, one page per month, makes the sequence visible at a glance and is the fastest way to spot a missing frame or a shifted camera.
Write a short note with each frame: what was done to the field since the last visit, what the weather had been, anything that changed in the frame that was not caused by the season. The note is what turns a set of images into a record. Without it, a reader in five years will see a field and not know what happened to it.
Back up in two places, one of them off site. A year of weekly frames is fifty-two files that cannot be retaken.
What equipment is actually needed?
Very little. A camera with a manual setting, a tripod, a way to mark the exact position of the tripod feet, and a notebook. A zoom lens set to one focal length and taped there is enough. The tape is not a joke: it prevents the small drift in framing that ruins a sequence.
A phone camera can do the work if the position and the hour are held. The limit is not the sensor, it is the discipline. A dedicated camera helps because it can be left set up and ready, which reduces the chance that a visit is skipped.
How long should the record run?
One year is the minimum. Two years show the difference between a season and a pattern. Five years show the effect of a change in management: a new grazing regime, a switch to no-till, a hedge laid or removed. The value of the record grows with its length, and the cost of keeping it is one visit and one file per interval.
What the record cannot show
The frames show the surface. They do not show soil structure below the top few centimetres, organic matter, biological activity or compaction. A photograph of a field is a record of appearance, and appearance is a useful but partial measure. The frames tell a reader where to dig, when to sample and what to compare. They do not replace the sample.
That limit is worth stating plainly in the notes. A record that claims more than it can show is less useful than one that says exactly what it is.
